Sound Island, Paris, 1994
Sound sculpture
The French Ministry of Culture commissioned Sound Island for the 50th anniversary of D-Day in the summer of 1994. I created a network of live microphones and hydrophones on the Normandy coast that transmitted the live sounds of the sea to a loudspeaker system placed on the four facades of the Arc de Triomphe. The invisible breaking waves transformed the monument, masking the traffic noise of the surrounding traffic circle with the natural white noise of the sea. |
