Landscape Sculpture with Fog Horns, San Francisco, 1981
Sound sculpture
Landscape Sculpture with Fog Horns was created in 1981 for the New Music America Festival. It was a large-scale work that mapped the acoustics of San Francisco Bay, by listening to it simultaneously from 8 locations via microphones that transmitted over phone lines. These distances, when divided by the speed of sound created a sonic texture of multiple delays. This living sound map was placed on the façade of Pier 2 at Fort Mason played by 8 loudspeakers, becoming the 9th location in this sonic topography.
