Complementing the upcoming major exhibition, Ai Weiwei: Button Up!, Ai Weiwei will be participating in an exclusive conversation on the exhibition and a live 24-hour performance.
Join Factory International in dialogue with Ai Weiwei on Tuesday, July 2nd at 7 PM as they reflect on Ai's remarkable life and career, his fearless creative practice and the brand-new body of work at the heart of Button Up!.
From July 2-3 for a full 24 hours, Ai Weiwei will present Sewing a Button – a live performance work re-enacting a brutal, life-changing experience. Fifteen years ago, Ai Weiwei was secretly detained without any formal charges by Public Security in China. For 81 days, he lived in a single cell, eating his meals, washing and exercising between interrogations. Sewing a Button condenses Ai’s detention into 24 hours, inviting audiences through day and night to bear witness to his experience. In a recreation of his cell, Weiwei sleeps, eats, writes and washes – sometimes, he is interrogated.
