In honor of the Nasher Museum's 20th anniversary, Everything Now All At Once showcases iconic works in the Museum’s contemporary collection. This exhibition not only celebrates two decades of thoughtful collecting but also looks ahead. Recent acquisitions point to the museum’s continued commitment to its founding values and its ambitions for the future. As part of the Nasher's collection, Ai Weiwei's Marble Chair (2008) is on display in the exhibition.
Marble Chair takes the form of a traditional wooden chair from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1644 AD and 1644-1912 AD). Each chair is carved from a single block of marble, a medium often used for monuments and gravestones. The reinterpretation raises questions of history, memory, cultural authority and modernization.
