Andy Goldsworthy honored at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco's Annual Gala

Haines congratulates Andy Goldsworthy, who was honored at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s Annual Gala on April 16, 2026. Held at the de Young Museum, the evening brought together artists, museum patrons and leadership, and the broader community to celebrate his practice and lasting impact in the region.

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to the largest concentration of Goldsworthy’s work worldwide, including site-specific commissions at the de Young Museum (Drawn Stone, 2005), Stanford University (Stone River, 2001), and four works in the Presidio (Spire, 2008Wood Line, 2011; Tree Fall, 2013; Earth Wall, 2014). As Goldsworthy remarked that evening, “San Francisco, more than any other city, has fashioned me as an artist. It has been a privilege to be part of its creative energy — an energy central to its spirit and identity.”

In her introductory remarks, Cheryl Haines reflected on their 35-year relationship, grounded in a shared commitment to site-responsive work and public engagement. “In a place so defined by innovation and velocity, his work returns us to something more elemental. And in doing so, he has not only shaped this landscape — he has shaped how we experience it, and how we experience ourselves within it.”
