The National Air and Space Museum holds one of the most comprehensive collections of aeronautical and space-related art in the world with approximately 7,000 works in the collection. This July the Museum opens the exhibition The Art of Air and Space: Interpretations of Flight. The exhibition explores the relationship between art and the transformative power of the experience of flight through the display of the Museum's permanent collection. As part of the Museum's collection, Chris McCaw's Sunburned GSP#874 (Mojave) (2015) will be on view in the exhibition. Utilizing hand-built cameras, McCaw’s inventive process takes photography’s essential components — light and time, lenses and light-sensitive materials — to generate startlingly inventive photographic forms. In McCaw’s iconic Sunburn series, the lenses of his cameras function as magnifying glasses, allowing the sun to literally burn its path across the light-sensitive paper.
