The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA Australia) in Sydney has announced the selection of dissident artist Ai Weiwei to create a new monumental public artwork. Set to be unveiled this September, the work will be installed on the museum's iconic Tallawoladah Lawn. This commission is the second edition of the Neil Balnaves Tallawoladah Lawn Commission, an annual series of large-scale sculptural works by leading contemporary artists presented in front of the MCA.
Supported by The Balnaves Foundation, the series aims to invite international or Australian artists to create a monumental public artwork for the historic and culturally significant site of Tallawoladah over three years, from 2025 to 2028. This landmark initiative that will create memorable encounters with world-class contemporary art and ideas for millions of visitors beyond the walls of the Museum. The commission will be free and accessible to the public.
