Sunfire brings together six Bay-area photographers making innovative use of custom tools and optics to create landscapes that harnesses the power of sunlight and fire. Through image appropriation, experimentation with film and fabric, prolonged exposures, direct burns, and prismatic color fields, these artists exhibit the dramatic versatility of natural light. Chris McCaw’s inventive process transforms photography’s essential components—light, time, and photosensitive materials—into physical records of duration and exposure, highlighting our place within a cosmos in motion. In his iconic Sunburn series, the lenses of his hand-built cameras function as magnifying glasses, allowing the sun to literally burn its path directly into light-sensitive paper. Chris McCaw's Sunburned GSP #860, (Double midnight, Galbraith Lake, Arctic Circle, Alaska), 2015 will be on view. Spanning approximately thirty hours, McCaw's 25-panel photograph traces the sun’s trajectory across the sky as it burns its path through the silver gelatin paper. The work is a breathtaking record of landscape and weather, labor, and the passage of time.
