Meghann Riepenhoff’s camera-less cyanotypes are created in collaboration with the landscape and the ocean, at the edges of both. Paper coated with homemade cyanotype emulsion are draped along the shore, across branches, or packed in snow. Rain and snow, tide and current, wind and sediment all leave physical inscriptions through direct contact with the photographic materials.
Opening in March 2027, Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art announces the solo exhibition Meghann Riepenhoff: Waters of the Americas. The exhibition brings together works from Riepenhoff’s ongoing Waters of the Americas series, created by immersing light-sensitive paper directly into oceans, rivers, and lakes. Her camera-less cyanotypes physically register tides, rain, and ice, revealing the effects of shifting natural cycles, climate change, and chemical emissions on bodies of water across the Americas. The series examines photography’s environmental impact, using the polluted waters to produce cyanotypes that reflexively address the medium’s largely untold history, allowing its destructive capacity to become a generative force. Riepenhoff's recently completed artwork, Borderwaters (USA/Mexico, 04.23-25.26), commissioned by The San Diego Museum of Art will be on view in the exhibition.
