    Elemental II:
Photography and the Hand of Nature

    July 11 - September 5, 2025

Haines is pleased to present a new OVR celebrating a series of recent institutional acquisitions of works by John Chiara, Linda Connor, Binh Danh, Chris McCaw, and Meghann Riepenhoff, five West Coast photographers whose remarkable images are part of our current exhibition Elemental II: Photography and the Hand of NatureWhether printing directly in the landscape, repurposing the earliest photographic technologies and techniques, or building their own cameras, each artist creates singular objects that draw attention to the physicality of their processes, the materiality of their works, and the wonder and beauty of natural phenomena.

John Chiara (b. 1971, lives and works in San Francisco, CA) describes his process as part photography, part sculpture, and part event.” Created using massive, hand-built camera obscuras, his photographs of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond meditate on our built and natural surroundings, while foregrounding the chemistry and construction behind each image.

Chiara's works have recently been acquired by Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, CA; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, NV; and the Oakland Museum of California, CA.

Binh Danh (b. 1977, lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA) creates contemporary daguerreotypes of US National Parks, which he shoots on large format cameras modified to accept silver plates rather than film negatives. His command of this complex, antiquated process is revealed in stunningly intricate scenes and vistas. Often visiting the same sites as early photographers, Danh imbues this scenery with his own immigrant experience, exploring the connections between history, identity, and place.

Danh's work has recently been acquired by Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, CA; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CANational Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C, and is the subject of a solo exhibition Binh Danh: Advancing American Art at The Jule Museum at Auburn University, AL through December 7, 2025.

Chris McCaw (b. 1971, lives in Pacifica, CA) creates landscapes and seascapes in which light itself is both subject and medium. For over two decades, the artist has used built cameras outfitted with high powered lenses to harness the power of the sun, taking the analog photographic medium to its outer boundaries.

Recent museum acquisitions of McCaw's work include the Ackland Art Museum at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Library of Congress, Washington, D.C; and Nevada Museum of Art, Reno, NV.

Meghann Riepenhoff (b. 1979, lives in Bainbridge Island, WA) creates her cameraless cyanotypes in collaboration with the landscape, inviting water and weather to physically inscribe onto paper coated with homemade photographic materials.

Riepenhoff's works have recently been acquired by the University of Virginia, Richmond, VA, where they are on view its new Contemplative Commons, and by the Denver Art Museum, CO, currently on view in the exhibition What We've Been Up To: Landscape through December 2025.
